Sugar bone is a special part of the cow's skeleton, which consists of cartilage and articular head and has a spongy tissue structure. It needs to be made clear right away. The sugar bone got its name not because of its alleged sweetness, but because its surface is as white as granulated sugar, which is not at all typical for this kind of formations in the body.

Owners of pets, in particular dogs of large breeds, often wonder if it is possible to pamper their pets with this delicacy. On the one hand, sugar bone is a natural abrasive for "sharpening" teeth, on the other hand, a huge amount of bacteria can be present in it. In addition, the bones are poorly digested, which clog the stomach of dogs. But why do some people still take this risk?

Which dogs are recommended for sugar bone

Given that the use of bones is an excellent prevention of dental diseases, it is still possible to occasionally give them a bite to dogs. This activity is especially useful for puppies aged 4 to 6 months, because during this period they change their teeth and often they gnaw literally everything around.

It should be borne in mind that it is recommended to give bones only to dogs of large and medium breeds. It is important that the pet does not have any problems with the dental cavity, otherwise the sugar bone can only do harm. However, there are special cases in which this delicacy should be stopped.

When you should not give bones

If the owner of the pet began to notice aggressive behavior on the part of the dog when eating a bone, it should be excluded from the diet as soon as possible. As a rule, this manifests itself in the following:

  • dog guards/hides the bone;
  • gets angry when someone approaches her;
  • stops listening to his master;
  • behaves aggressively towards other animals.

If the above signs are observed, you should stop giving your dog sugar bones. Training will help get rid of "gaps" in the behavior of a pet.

Cautions

Dog breeders who participate in various exhibitions should be especially careful about the diet of their pets. Even the slightest damage to a tooth from eating bones can cost an animal a prize.

For the prevention of stones and other dental diseases in such cases, it is best to use analogues of natural sugar bone. These can be purchased "bones" from a safe composition or home-made products. One of the recipes is below:

  • boil the liver (50 g), finely chop, put it to dry inoven at low temperature;
  • porridge "Hercules" (80 g) grind with a coffee grinder or blender;
  • make a "dough" with 130 g wheat flour, ground oats, one chicken egg and a tablespoon of vegetable oil;
  • add ground cloves (2 buds);

From the dough you need to roll out a flat cake, sprinkle it on top with dried liver. Fold the shortbread in half and continue rolling until the liver is evenly distributed over the dough. Cut the workpiece into convenient pieces, put in the oven for 20-30 minutes. Homemade treat for dogs is ready!

Curious fact

Few people know, but sugar bone is also present in the human skeleton. It is located on the bends of the elbows and knees.
