Restaurants and bars are ready to offer their customers a wide selection of alcoholic beverages. You can choose your favorite pure drink or order a cocktail of your favorite ingredients. Shots have become quite popular drinks: this is a small alcoholic cocktail that is recommended to drink in one gulp. A prominent representative of such drinks is "B-52".

Historical background

At the moment there is no single version of the origin of this drink. Some argue that this is the invention of a pilot in 1944. Others argue that in 1945 a bartender came up with this cocktail at Keg's steakhouse.

The name of the cocktail is associated with the musical rock band The B-52s, as well as fashionable hairstyles for women in the 60s. Unfortunately, all these variants of the B-52's appearance are not confirmed or are legends of local residents.

The following events are the official version. In 1955, he joined the United States Air Forcea new strategic bomber "Boeing B-52 Stratofortress" arrived. At the same moment, an alcoholic cocktail with a sweetish coffee flavor, consisting of three layers, appears in one of the Malibu bars. To draw attention to the new drink, the administration decided to name it in honor of the newcomer to US aviation - "B-52".

Cocktail composition B-52

At the moment there is a wide variety of ingredients in "B-52" as each bar or restaurant strives to bring something new and make their recipe unique. The International Association of Bartenders is trying to preserve the classic composition of this drink loved by the people, represents the best bartenders in the world to the public and popularizes bar culture. According to accepted standards, "B-52" consists of:

  • Kahlua coffee liqueur;
  • Baley's cream liqueur;
  • Grand Marnier orange liqueur.

Each component is added in order, 20 ml each.

There are several variations of the considered cocktail. Many variations depend solely on the brand of liqueurs and whether they are set on fire. Due to the fact that bars like to experiment with the recipe of this drink, a whole collection of similar cocktails was invented under the name "Series B-50":

  • "B-57" - a layer of cream liqueur is replaced by mint schnapps;
  • "B-55" - Xenta Absent is poured instead of orange liqueur;
  • "B-54" - orange liqueur is replaced with almond "Amaretto";
  • "B-53" is made when cream liqueur is replaced by "Sambuca" with anise liqueur (also known as "Oscar Wilde");
  • "B-52" - two layers are added, which consist of Bacardi and Frangelico rum (also such a cocktail can be found under the name "B-52" with a full load);
  • "B-51" - orange liquor is being replaced by walnut Frangelico.

Again, there is also a lighter version of the B-52 cocktail, the so-called "female version". Its lightness lies in the fact that coffee liqueur is replaced with chocolate, which adds even more sweetness to an alcoholic drink.

B-52 cocktail recipe

All of the listed components are carefully poured in order according to the "build" method, i.e. in such a way that the layers do not mix. The drink is served in a shot glass, which comes with a straw. According to all the rules for serving this cocktail, the upper layer is set on fire, and at the moment of burning the drink is quickly drunk. There is another way of serving - with ice, when the layers are mixed when serving with the addition of crushed ice.

There are no difficulties in making a B-52 cocktail at home. The recipe is practically the same as the one served in restaurants or bars.

  • Baileys cream liqueur or any other analogue thereof;

If you are preparing an alcoholic cocktail at home, then you need to carefully monitor to get uniform layers. Most often, people are faced with the fact that when a new layer is added, the old one breaks and the drink is mixed. To avoid the described error, you need to follow the following instructions for cooking "B-52":

  1. The bottom layer is coffee. Pour it into the stack first.
  2. Then you will need either a knife or a spoon. Using the back of a spoon or the blade of a knife, pour the cream liqueur over the coffee layer.
  3. The last ingredient - orange liqueur - add to the stack carefully, along the edge of a knife or the edge of a spoon. Keep the layers even.

Rules for using "B-52"

In addition to the difficulties of preparing the original alcoholic drink, there is one more thing - special rules for drinking.

As mentioned earlier, "B-52" refers to puff shots, so it is served in a special tall stack. There are two types of serving - set on fire and regular. Remember that in any case, the drink must be drunk in one gulp. If you are served a "fiery" cocktail, remember that you need to drink it very quickly through a straw, otherwise the alcohol will evaporate and the layers will warm up,melt and mix. To prevent the cocktail from losing its marketable appearance when set on fire, bartenders pour rum over a layer of orange liqueur.
