Mocha, also called mocaccino, is a chocolate version of a hot drink. Its name comes from the city of Mocha in Yemen, which was one of the centers of the early coffee trade. As with lattes, the mocha recipe is based on espresso and hot milk, but differs by the addition of chocolate, usually in the form of sweet cocoa powder (although many varieties use chocolate syrup). Mocha may also contain dark or milk chocolate.

Characteristics and types

The same name may also refer to hot chocolate with espresso added. Like cappuccino, mocha usually has a distinctive milky foam on top, but is sometimes served with whipped cream. The drink is usually garnished with a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa powder. In addition, pieces of marshmallows (marshmallows) can also be added on top for extra flavor and decoration.

Another variant of the drink is white mocha, the recipe of which involves the addition of white chocolate instead of dark and milk. There are also versions of this coffee that mix two syrups. This mixture is known from severalnames, including black and white or marbled mocha, as well as "mosaic" or "zebra".

The second common drink is the moccaccino, which is a double espresso with double the amount of milk and cocoa powder (or chocolate milk). Both mocha and mocha can contain chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and additional toppings such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or chocolate drops.

The third version of the mocha recipe is to use a coffee base instead of espresso. In this case, the basis of the drink will be coffee, boiled milk and added chocolate. Basically, it's a cup of coffee mixed with hot chocolate. The caffeine content of this variation will then be equivalent to the amount of coffee added.

How to make mocha coffee at home?

The recipe for this drink is quite simple. You can make mocha in many different ways. To do this, you need to use a coffee maker or coffee machine, or do it on the stove. For the first option you will need:

To use the coffee machine:

  • 3 tablespoons (22 grams) of sweetened cocoa powder or 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup;
  • milk - from 295 to 355 ml;
  • 15 grams of espresso base;
  • whipped cream or chocolate shavings for decoration.

To use the coffee maker:

  • 2 tablespoons of capsule coffee for approximately 177 ml of water;
  • 44, 5 ml chocolate syrup or 3 tablespoons sweetened cocoa powder;
  • milk - from 295 to 355 ml;
  • whipped cream or chocolate shavings for decoration.

The recipe for mocha coffee in a coffee machine is as follows:

  1. First of all, measure the amount of milk and chocolate. You will need approximately 3 tablespoons of sweetened cocoa powder or 2 tablespoons of syrup to make 236 ml of the finished drink.
  2. You can place the chocolate in the mug you will be serving the mocha in, or put it in a bowl of hot milk. Measure out the correct amount of milk.
  3. You can also put chocolate in the small container of the coffee machine. This way, you will pour the boiling coffee directly into the chocolate, which will help it dissolve.
  4. Make an espresso. To make a double coffee, place 15 grams of powder into a clean port filter. Smooth it out so that it spreads smoothly over the base. This will ensure that the water flows through it evenly. Close the coffee machine and place a small metal jug under it. It will take about 20-25 seconds to cook.
  5. Then boil the milk. Turn on this mode in the coffee machine a few seconds before you start the brewing process. Then put the milk in and heat strongly several times to make foam. It should reach between 60 and 71 °C.
  6. Mix espresso and milk. If you've mixed it with chocolate, you'll just need to pour the hot chocolate into your coffee. If you placed the chocolate in the mug separately, you will need to mix it into the espresso to dissolve it. Then slowly pour the hot milk into the drink.

How to decorate a drink?

You can mix the mixture thoroughly or practice creating intricate designs. To make a pattern on the surface, place the espresso in a mug and carefully pour the hot chocolate over it to make a second layer. Use a spoon or fork to make circles or other patterns.

Then decorate the drink and serve. In most cases, mocha is made with whipped cream. This is an easy method to give the drink not only aesthetics, but also a delicate taste. You can also sprinkle it with sweetened cocoa powder or drizzle with chocolate flavored syrup.

If you are decorating the mocha with whipped cream, be sure to leave about 2-3 cm of space at the top of the mug. Otherwise, the container may overflow when they melt.

How to make it in a coffee maker

The recipe for mocha at home in a coffee maker is:

  • Make coffee first. Fill the coffee maker with cool filtered water and place the coffee grounds in the filter basket. Turn on the coffee maker to make an espresso.
  • Prepare the chocolate next. If you are using chocolate syrup, pour about 45 ml into the mug in which you will be serving the mocha. If you are using sweetened cocoa powder, place approximately 3 tablespoons of the powder in the mug you will be using for the preparation.
  • After that, you need to heat the milk. pour it outinto a small saucepan and heat over moderate heat on the stove. Avoid boiling milk, stop heating as soon as small bubbles begin to appear on the surface.
  • You can also heat milk in the microwave. Pour it into the mug containing the chocolate and heat in the microwave for at least a minute. Fill the mug only 2/3 full so you have room to add coffee.
  • Pour hot coffee over chocolate syrup or powder into a mug. Mix to dissolve the chocolate and slowly pour in the milk. If you like the milky taste, fill the mug with just 1/3 of the coffee and then fill it all the way with hot milk.

If you want to add extra flavor to your mocha (recipe pictured above), top it with whipped cream. For a more stylish serving, sprinkle sweetened cocoa powder on top. Some cooks place the stencil on top and sprinkle powder on top of it to create a beautiful design. You can also pour chocolate syrup over the top of your drink or sprinkle it with mini marshmallows.

How to make original mocha coffee

The drink recipe can be modified depending on your preference. Experiment with flavors and add the spices you like to pair with your coffee. The Mexican version of mocha is the most popular. It includes cinnamon and some chili powder. You can also try ground cardamom or lavender.

Coffee with ice cream

While whipped cream is the usualfilling for mocha, the recipe can be supplemented with something more fun. Add a spoonful of chocolate or vanilla ice cream to the finished drink. In addition to cooling, it will also make the drink richer and more intense.

Use coffee ice cream if you want a rich espresso flavor.

Ice Mocha

If you don't want a hot drink, you can make an ice mocha. The recipe for its preparation is not complicated. To make this with a coffee machine, combine espresso and chocolate syrup. Stir the prepared base with cold milk and pour the mixture into a cup filled with ice.

Experiment with the ratio of milk, coffee and chocolate until you find the right combination.

Use a different chocolate

Most mocha drinkers use either cocoa powder or cocoa syrup. This creates a dark and rich drink. You can try using milk or white chocolate syrup, especially if you like sweet mocha. If you want to add extra thickness, use ganache. It is a mixture of cream and chocolate that can be diluted in syrup or heated with coffee or milk.
