The Dry Martini or Dry Martini is one of the most famous and sought-after cocktails in the world. It is worth noting that the drink is especially popular among members of high society. The Dry Martini cocktail is over a hundred years old, and its most famous fans were Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill and Harry Truman. How to prepare a popular drink and what to drink it with, we will tell in our article.
Drink history
The dry martini was made famous by Ian Fleming, the author of spy novels. The author posted the recipe for the drink in his first book about James Bond. I wonder where Ian got this recipe from, did he come up with it himself?
As it turned out, the legendary Dry Martini cocktail has nothing to do with the Martini brand. Three versions of its origin are known. According to the first theory, back in the middle of the 19th century, in one of the bars in the city of Martinez, there lived a famous bartender, whose name was ProfessorJerry Thomas (also called the dad of all bartenders). This man had a complete encyclopedia of various cocktails.
As the legend went, one day a stranger wandered into the bar where Jerry worked and offered him a piece of gold if he could surprise him. The bartender was not at a loss and mixed a gold-colored cocktail for the stranger. The drink, which was invented by the guy, included 50 ml of gin, 25 ml of red vermouth, 10 ml of Sour Cherry liqueur, 5 ml of orange bitter, a small slice of orange and ice. This drink is considered by many to be the prototype of the dry martini.
According to the second theory, at the beginning of the 20th century, an elixir of tranquility was invented by an Italian bartender in a hotel in New York. However, this recipe for the Dry Martini cocktail does not coincide with today's. The drink included lemon juice, olives, gin and ice.
According to the third version, the popularity of the cocktail we are interested in came after stories about Bond. But here, too, there was a rather confusing story. In the first episodes, the drink that is prepared for James, he calls "Vesper", but already in the middle of the adventure, his name changes to "Dry Martini", and at the end - to "Vodka Martini".
