This delicious tradition was adopted by the ancient Romans. Flat cakes with pieces of meat, olives, cheese, greens were part of the mandatory diet of Roman legionnaires.
In the 1st century BC, Mark Apicius (a Roman) described in his book the first recipes for ancient pizza: pieces of chicken, mint, nuts, garlic, cheese were placed on the dough in different combinations and proportions, all this was poured with olive butter.
Tomatoes appeared in Italy in 1522, and from then to the present time, classic pizza has been prepared here - the standard for cuisines around the world.
In the 17th century in Italy appearedspecial people preparing pizza for peasants. Legend has it that in 1772 King Ferdinand I tasted pizza incognito in Naples and wanted to introduce this dish into the royal menu. The attempt was unsuccessful: his wife considered the dish for commoners unsuitable for roy alty.
The next king - Ferdinand II - was more inventive: on his orders, pizza was secretly baked and served on the royal table on the celebration of the thirtieth birthday of Queen Margaret of Savoy. The pizza recipe for roy alty has since been called "Margherita".
