Many have never heard of such a berry as irga. This is explained by the fact that it may not grow where you live. The homeland of the shadberry is the temperate climatic regions of the northern hemisphere. It grows throughout North America, especially in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada, and is also found in Asia and Europe.
As you can see in the photos, it resembles a blueberry in size as well as color. However, the similarity is only external - the berry has its own unique delicate aroma and unusual taste. Despite the fact that the benefits of irgi have been noticed for a long time, its artificial cultivation began only a few years ago. Until recently, these berries were not available on the market.
The most common species of this plant are small trees, often multi-stemmed, or large dense shrubs. The bark is gray (rarely brown), has a smooth texture. The fruits are berry-like pome fruits that range in color from red and purple to almost black at the end of ripening. Their diameter is usually 5-15 mm, and the taste can be from insipid to very sweet.
Previously, this berry was used for medicinal purposes. Modern science has also confirmed the benefits of irgi, when it was found that it contains a large amount of antioxidants - phenolic resins, flavonols and anthocyanins. As you know, these substances have a beneficial effect on the body.
In addition to the unique sweet taste, the benefits of shadberry are manifested in its nutritional value. This berry is an excellent source of manganese, magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, copper and carotene. A 100-gram serving of fresh shadberry can provide 88 mg of calcium, making it a better source of calcium than red meat, vegetables, and grains.
In addition, these berries are an excellent source of iron, since one hundred grams contains up to 22.3% of the daily requirement of this substance. The benefit of shadberry also lies in the fact that it has a high content of sugar and vitamin C and has three times more manganese and copper than the same amount of raisins.
In folk medicine, the effectiveness of berries in the treatment of throat diseases has long been noted - gargling with the juice of this berry can quickly cure a sore throat. In addition, the juice promotes rapid healing of wounds and abscesses. You can also be convinced of the benefits of irgi in the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract - inflammatory processes and colitis. These fruits can also be a significant help with insomnia - they act on the nervous system in a relaxing way, thereby helping to fall asleep quickly.
Speaking in general about the benefits and harms of irgi, we must not forget about its ability to lower blood pressure. This suggests thatthe berry is undesirable in large quantities for hypotensive patients. At the same time, people who spend a lot of time behind the wheel, the fruits are not contraindicated - in order to cause a sedative effect, you will need to eat more than a kilogram of berries at the same time, which is unlikely.
