Why do most buyers choose one or another brand of wine? Are they looking at the appellation? Or do they clearly understand how the terroir affects the properties of the drink? Or maybe they are looking for the year of millesim on the bottle? No, as a rule, wine is chosen … by brand name.
One of these big names is Mateus Rose wine.
The most striking facts about Mateusz wine
- To date, over 1 billion bottles have been sold.
- Wine "Mateusz" can be bought in more than 125 countries.
- This is the world's best-selling rosé despite fierce competition.
Description and characteristics
Wine Mateus rose is a semi-dry rose wine. A little more bubbly. Fortress - 11 degrees.
Color - an original and pleasant shade of pale pink, with a slight transition to salmon.
The taste is soft, floral, playful, fresh and juicy.
Brand Story
The brand began its history shortly before World War II, in 1942year, when the head of the family of winemakers Fernando van Zeller Guedes decided to create a sparkling rose wine to complement and diversify the line of existing red and white sparkling wines. The fact is that sparkling wines were in great demand at that time in Europe and America.
Connoisseurs of wine "Mateusz Rose" could not help but pay attention to the image of a certain architectural structure on the label. This is the Mateus Palace, which is located near the town of Vila Real, in northern Portugal. It is a masterpiece of architecture and a finalist for the Seven Wonders of Portugal project. It was in its vicinity that a winery was built, which produced the first bottles of the new wine.
Fun fact: the palace was not the property of the Guedes family, so the vintners paid for the right to use his image on their bottles. The owners of the palace had two options: take a one-time fee or receive roy alties from each bottle. They preferred the first one and, understandably, lost a lot, because more than a billion bottles have been sold to date. Even with minimum pay today, they would be billionaires.
What determined success
- Good moment. Mateus wine corresponded to the tastes of that time. Sparkling ceremonial wines, that is, spumante wines, were very popular, while no such drinks were produced in Portugal. Gedes was the first.
- Bottle. Its shape is reminiscent of a soldier's canteen from the First World War. A very narrow neck merges into a pleasant, teardrop-shaped base. Apart fromDespite the fact that at that time it looked very original among the rows of classic bottles, the drink in such a bottle seemed close and understandable, because the memories of wartime were still very fresh for many. Cork is only natural, because Portugal is proud to be the largest cork supplier, but, unfortunately, many wines from Portugal have been shipped with screw caps lately.
- Color. Technologically, wine is made in almost the same way as white wine, but for his novelty, Guedes chose a different grape variety - red. When squeezing, the juice contacts the skin for a while, just long enough to acquire a faint pink color. The hue and taste of the wine was really unusual.
Going to market
The wine entered the British market in the 50s and became one of the wines of mass consumption. The fact is that before the war such a category simply did not exist. Wines were the subject of piece demand for certain segments of the population. Three brands - Black Tower and Blue Nun and Mateus Rosé - have conquered the market. The sales and income of the Guedes family grew steadily. By the end of the 80s, a white version of the wine was released - Mateus White Wine, and by this time the Mateus Rosé brand occupied 40% of the entire market (more than 3 million cases in 100 countries).
Today, Portugal is not considered a major wine-growing region for the production of rosé wines, significantly inferior in terms of domestic volumes to Italy and France, but "Mateus Rosé" is always among the top ten rosé wines.

Other wines "Mateusz"
Wine "Mateusz" quickly became a sign of 70s fashion with its passion for everything bright and slightly extravagant, such as disco style and bell-bottoms. Wine graced every table, both festive and everyday.
By the 90s, sweet Portuguese wines had become less fashionable, and therefore the company enriched its line with various variations of a well-known and beloved brand.
- In 2005, Mateus Rosé Tempranillo appeared - brighter in color, fruity, with perky strawberry notes, it is well balanced with fresh acidity, reminiscent of the original Mateus Rosé wine, that is, it can appeal to those who are nostalgic for the 70- m, but at the same time well meets the spirit of modernity. For example, the majority of buyers in Spain are young girls.
- Mateus Sparkling. We will talk about brut wine separately below. Also in this series of sparkling (sparkling - shining, sparkling) wines, in addition to rose brut, included dry white wine and semi-dry rose.
- Mateus Blanco is a semi-dry white wine. This is the so-called still sparkling wine, that is, it contains almost no carbon dioxide. Portuguese wines "Mateus" are hard to imagine without a description of the white variety. Light white wine Mateus has a delicate citrus-fruity taste. Very fresh, young, with a good balance of acidity. Light, barely noticeable carbonation makes the taste even more alive. This drink will be just great in the hot season.
Brut
Brut is a type of sparkling wine with an extremely low sugar content. The sugar level is 0.3%, in addition, this wine is extremely low in calories - only 64 kcal per 100 ml of drink. These wines got their sonorous name - brut - because the British were the first to appreciate them. When the whole world went crazy for sweet wines, it was in the UK that they managed to taste how much brighter each note of sparkling wine is revealed in the absence of sweetness. Mateus Rose Brut is made in the best traditions of Mateusz wines:
- Perlage, that is, the game of bubbles - very beautiful. The bubbles are small and persistent, giving the wine a vibrant shimmer.
- The taste is velvety, with a pleasant lively sourness. There are hints of strawberry and apricot. The aftertaste is creamy.
- The aroma has notes of floral, fruity (ripe raspberry, apple, pear), with a subtle hint of smelltoasted bread.
Why serve wine "Mateusz"?
It is universal. Of course, gourmets make some distinctions between brands of wine, offering light pinks to combine with fatty meat dishes, and strawberry-raspberries with desserts. But in general, there are no restrictions, the wine "Mateusz" is quite soft, with a balanced taste, it will well emphasize cheese, fruits, red fish, grilled meat. It will be especially appropriate in the hot season with light snacks and meals, due to its freshness.
Some say it goes well with Indian and Chinese food.
The rosé wine "Mateusz" will especially please those who love cheese, but do not understand brands. Any variety will go well with it! The fact is that white and red wines are more capricious in this sense, not every cheese is suitable for red or white. And dry rosé has just the right acidity and fruitiness, making it the perfect partner for cheese.
How to drink rose wine
The strict rule for drinking rosé wine is to serve it chilled. If we are talking about an aperitif, then it is cooled to 8-10 ° C, if with some dishes, then to 10-12 ° C.
Quality wine is drunk in small sips, the only way to fully experience the subtle bouquet of flavors. The wine "Mateusz" also has a pronounced aftertaste - a creamy shade.
Rosé wines are consumed young, maximum 2 years after bottling. The years are not good for them. Rose wine is freshness, brightness, lightness, tenderness and juiciness. In three years, it will lose them, and perhaps so much that it becomes unpleasant to use. Years color those wines that acquire elegance and softness over the years. In order not to be mistaken with the moment of opening the wine, you can refer to the table of millesims, which indicates what year the corresponding harvest was and when this wine should be consumed.
Reviews
Even a cursory review of reviews about Mateus Rose allows us to draw unexpected conclusions: this is a product that is truly outstanding in terms of taste and other characteristics. Why unexpected? Because, as a rule, reviews are not so unambiguous, there will always be those who will put not five out of five, but four. The Mateusz rosé wine is unanimously given a five, with the exception of individual buyers who put a deuce or a one and describe the sourness with a bitter aftertaste, which clearly indicates that such a buyer most likely stumbled upon a fake.
How do customers describe wine?
Its taste is called very light, but at the same time unusual. Very unique and memorable, it is interesting to solve it. There are light sour notes, thanks to which the wine is well refreshing in the heat. It is not sickening. But some call it too soft, indefinite. Others, on the contrary, write that the taste is bright, although really without cloying. It goes amazingly well with meat and seafood (squid, mussels, clams), it will complement sushi, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine well, and also decoratesalads and Italian dishes like lasagna and risotto.
