Manhattan is often referred to as the king of mixed drinks. At first glance, its preparation seems simple: mix whiskey, sweet vermouth and a couple of drops of bitter. Anyone can make a more or less decent version of it. But a truly outstanding Manhattan can only be prepared by someone who truly understands the importance of the necessary ingredients.

Over the past century, when many of the best alcoholic cocktails have been invented, this drink has managed to maintain its popularity. Perhaps, since the invention of his recipe, there have been small changes in it (for example, a version with the addition of Curacao or Maraschino liqueur), but vermouth always remains an integral part.

There are several versions regarding its origin. One popular story relates that in 1874 Jennie Jerome (Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of Winston Churchill), a socialite who was considered one of the most beautiful womenof her time, hosted a banquet in honor of presidential candidate Samuel Jones Tilden at New York's famous Manhattan Club. The cocktail devised by Dr. Ian Marshall, which was served to guests, was a mixture of (American) rye whiskey, liqueur, vermouth and bitters. The success of the banquet also made it fashionable to order a drink, which was subsequently ordered with reference to the name of the club. True, this story was called into question by Churchill family biographers, who claimed that Jenny Jerome lived in France at that time and was in an interesting position.

During the era of Prohibition in America, the composition of the drink changed a little. The production of rye whiskey and later bourbon (Bourbon whiskey) did not actually exist. Mostly Canadian whiskey was used. But even after the abolition of Prohibition, rye whiskey was not available, given that the distilleries were closed for a long time, and the product requires a long aging process. Factories that produced corn whiskey recovered faster. Some historians believe that they did not stop production at all, but to stay in business during the ban on alcohol, they traded bourbon for "medicinal purposes", according to prescriptions obtained from doctors (more than a million gallons every year!).

Manhattan is a cocktail driven by subtlety. Whiskey is the base. What is the best brand to use? It depends on personal taste preferences. But the ideal option would be the one on the basis of which the drink was originally created. Ryewhiskey - very characteristic and strong. Bourbon has a sweet taste. In America, Canadian is still popular. But here's a detail to note: Rye Whiskey should generally be made with at least 51 percent rye, while Canadian Whiskey has no such restrictions and is often blended.

While the Manhattan is a cocktail that is essentially an icon of mixed spirits, it can often be quite difficult to find a drinking establishment where this drink is made in the classic way. With regard to vermouth, it should be borne in mind that he must calm the “wild soul” of whiskey, but at the same time allow him to be recognized. Simply put, the components must balance each other. Two parts whiskey to one part vermouth is nothing more than a general course. It should be remembered that the recipes for spiced wines differ drastically depending on the brands. They may include hyssop, coriander, juniper, cloves, chamomile, orange peel, rose petals, calamus root, elder flowers, gentian, ginger, allspice. Sometimes it is enough to add quite a bit of strong drink to them and get delicious alcoholic cocktails. Fine sweet vermouth Martini & Rossi is a light, grassy, fine-textured wine that can be used in fairly large quantities (depending on the whisky) in a Manhattan cocktail.

Bitters are an equally important component. It is also a matter of taste, although, as a rule, they choose Angostura. Some might prefer orange bitters.

And finally, with regard togarnish decorations. If the cocktail has a citrus flavor, then it is better to use lemon zest. With "Angostura" - it would be ideal to decorate it with maraschino cherries.
