How it all started

It was founded in 1880 by Alfred von Vacano. He didn't have to start from scratch. There was already a brewery on the banks of the Volga, which belonged to the city government. Previously, it was owned by the merchant Bureev, who was unable to organize the work of the brewery in such a way that it would make a profit. So the Zhiguli brewery was leased for 100 years.

Right to the point

Mr. von Vakano started the production of new beers - "Viennese" and "Viennese Table". During the year, he managed to develop 35,670 buckets of foamy drink. Von Wakano was not only engaged in production. He demolished the old and rebuilt new buildings of the plant, ennobled the embankment and the surrounding area. Thanks to his efforts, the production premises were very clean, which was an unusual phenomenon for the Russian reality of that time, as well as electric lighting, which was carried out on the territoryeverywhere. The owner constantly improved his offspring, expanded production, completed building buildings. Over time, a one-story stone barn was built to store dishes and m alt, a water pump, a filter station, residential buildings, a carpentry and locksmith workshops. A little later, a two-story forge, an elevator, a warehouse appeared.

General recognition

The owner of the factories created the Partnership in 1881, and in 1896 it already received a gold medal at the trade and industrial exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod. In 1900, the Zhiguli Brewery received the highest award at the Paris Industrial Exhibition, in 1902 - in London, in 1903 - in Rome. The total number of gold medals received in 14 years is 15, to which we must add other prestigious awards received during this time.

Various Interests

In the possession of Alfred von Vakano was not only the Zhiguli brewery. Seven years later, he built a gas factory. The city authorities, in exchange for a construction permit, demanded that the local theater and the Strukovsky Garden be supplied with gas. Von Wakano agreed to these terms. The partnership owned several steamships and had its own wharf. In addition, the factory owner did a lot to improve the city itself. He laid tram lines, sewerage, maintained a hospital built at his expense and transferred to the city. He founded Pushkin Square and ennobled Theater Hill. Von Wakano amassed a rich collection of Asian and European art. Now she is in Samaraart museum.

What happened next

Despite all the good deeds, Alfred von Vakano and his son Vladimir were exiled to Buzuluk in 1915 on suspicion of espionage. Before that, the Zhiguli brewery itself was also closed. Samara never saw von Wakano again as its owner. This also happened for the reason that in 1914 a dry law was adopted, the authorities zealously fought against alcoholic beverages. From 1915 to 1920 production was suspended. The factory premises turned into warehouses where grenades and ammunition were stored. The mill organized the production of canned food for the needs of the army. After 1920, the Zhiguli Brewery (Samara), the photo of which is presented in this article, began to belong to the Council of the National Economy. In 1923, Alfred von Vacano's two sons, Erich and Lev, leased the plant for 12 years and started brewing beer again. However, they will not stay on it for a long time, and it will again become the property of the state trust. They still brew beer on it. Since 1992, the plant has been owned by Zhigulevskoe Pivo LLP. A memorial plaque with the name of von Wakano is placed on the factory building.

Today

Over the past years, the plant was reconstructed, its territory was expanded. The main thing is that production has been maintained and even increased. Who today is not familiar with such a beer as Zhigulevskoye? This drink is made from pale m alt, barley and hops. At exhibitions, this variety takes prizes. Few people know that this is the former "Vienna", which was renamedin 1934 with the light hand of the People's Commissar of the Food Industry Mikoyan.

Another popular name for the drink produced here is "Samarskoe". It was developed in 1959. The creator was the chief brewer of the plant A. Kasyanov. Several other beers produced at the distillery are named after its first owner: "Von Vacano", "Von Vakano 1881", "Von Vakano Elit", "Von Vakano Venskoe". According to a good tradition, all components of the drink are natural. In addition to alcoholic beverages, the Zhiguli plant produces lemonades familiar to everyone: Pinocchio, Sayany, Grusha and others, as well as pure sparkling water.

Zhigulevskiy Brewery (Samara), whose address is 4 Volzhsky Prospekt, is a landmark of this city. We can be proud of our country, where they produce such high-quality beer, using old recipes for this. However, the story of Alfred von Vakano makes one wonder if the man who did so much for Samara was treated fairly?
